The red and white crenellated walls and golden domes of Novodevichy Convent make it one of Moscow's most attractive monasteries. Situated a short walk from the Luzhniki Sports Stadium, in a tranquil southern suburb of Moscow, inside a bend in the Moscow River, the Convent's leafy gardens are a pleasure to stroll in during the summer months and a welcome retreat from the bustle of the city. Most of the capital's monasteries were built between the 13th and 16th centuries, not merely as religious centers but as fortified structures with the express purpose of defending the city from Tatar and Pole attacks. Novodevichy, or "New Maidens Convent" in English, was founded by Vasily III in 1524 to commemorate the recapture of Smolensk from the Lithuanians in 1514.

Kolomenskoe Estate
The old imperial estate at Kolomenskoe is one of the most picturesque and enjoyable of Moscow's out of town attractions and is an absolute must see for those with an extra day to spare in the Russian capital. The estate is nestled on the steep west bank of the Moscow River, 10km southeast of the Kremlin and surrounded by 390 hectares of ancient forest land, which is now a conservation zone and one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Kolomenkoe features vintage wooden structures built by many of the country's Tsars, one of the most beautiful churches and examples of Russian tent-roofed architecture in the country, and is a beautiful site for a spot of summer sunbathing or a snowy walk in the winter.

Kuskovo Estate
The Kuskovo Estate, nicknamed the Moscow Versailles due to its formal French gardens, is a perfect example of an 18th century Muscovite country residence. The history of the estate dates back to 1715, when Tsar Peter the Great awarded the village of Kuskovo to Boris Sheremetev, a Russian general who excelled at the battle of Poltava and who decided to build a summer residence there. The Sheremetyevs were one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in Russia and the estate was used by several generations of the family.

Pushkin Fine Arts Museum
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is Moscow's equivalent to St. Petersburg's enormous Hermitage Museum, and boasts an impressive collection ranging from Roman antiquities to canvasses by Gauguin. The museum was established in 1912 by the father of the famous Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva, who was well renowned in Moscow as a Professor of Art History at Moscow State University. The early collection was comprised mainly of casts of antique, Medieval and Roman sculptures, which were somewhat controversially augmented with artifacts from private collections that were confiscated after the Revolution of 1917.

Bolshoi Theater Performance Tickets
Since its foundation towards the end of the 18th century, Moscow's celebrated Bolshoi Theater has experienced a turbulent and dramatic history. The forerunner of today's theater was Prince P.V. Urussov's Public Opera and Ballet Theater, commissioned by Catherine the Great in 1776 and financially backed by the Englishman Michael Maddox. The first of many disasters struck the theatre in 1805 when fire gutted the building, leaving it beyond repair and Maddox completely penniless. Ownership of the theater was then transferred to the state and Moscow acquired its first Imperial Theater.

Diamond Fund and the Kremlin Grounds
The Armory also houses the State Diamond Fund, a separate collection containing the most valuable gems in Russia. The highlights of the collection are the priceless diamond-encrusted Coronation Crown of Catherine the Great and the 190-carat Orlov Diamond, given to the Empress by her lover Count Grigory Orlov and set into the Imperial Sceptre. The collection features a whole host of jeweled necklaces and earrings as well as the world's largest sapphire. Visitors may also be lucky enough to see a few more Faberge Eggs in the collection.

Sergiev Posad
Drive out of Moscow along the Yaroslavsky highway and find a small town Sergiev Posad some 70 km from the capital. The town emerged long time ago, round the St. Trinity Sergius Lavra, the monastery established here by one of the most honoured Russian saints, reverent Sergius of Radonezh. The monastery, which got the status of Lavra in 1744, has currently become a place of pilgrimage of the Russian Orthodox Church and one of the most interesting museums, where one may find the icons of Andrei Rublev and other famous masters of the 15th-18th centuries. The architecture ensemble of monastery created during the long period of the 14th-19th centuries is a unique sample of wonderful combination of different architectural styles forming the most impressive and harmonious composition.
